The Money Taboo

One of the hardest part about doing Dave Ramsey is containing the pure joy and excitement we feel every time we pay off a debt or make some other milestone.  The people who care are genuinely excited for us, but those people are few and far between.  More often than not, the response is comprised of raised eyebrows and questioning glares.

"Why would you do that?"

"Oh yeah.  Dave Ramsey - you have to stop your life to do that stuff."

Part of the problem is that money has become a taboo in our culture.  The only people you really talk about personal finance with are family.  Talking about money with friends is awkward.  Talking about money with acquaintances or strangers?  Good luck.  The few times I have thrown out real numbers when talking about our debt snowball progress with people other than immediate family, the conversation gets awkward.  Are they jealous?  Do they think Aleece and I are bragging?

No.  We are not bragging.  We are EXCITED.

Excited even feels like it falls short.  Doing the debt snowball is not easy, but it isn't painfully hard most of the time either.  This is something that everyone can do.  I want all of my friends, family, neighbors, students and acquaintances to do it.  The next time you start to talk money with someone that is in the midst of their Dave Ramsey experience, get excited with them.  Build off their energy, bottle it up and take it home to your own check book.  If you don't do this now, you never will.  Get excited, get motivated and start this now.
